Interview with Kimberly Collier | BlackHawk Data

What inspired you to pursue a career in IT?

I used to teach myself software whenever I had time and then started teaching and tutoring other people for fun. I always had a natural interest in innovation, and automation.

What is the most challenging part about being a woman in IT?

Not being heard… not being seen. People place me in a box that makes them feel comfortable
whether it’s limiting you to your job title or being in competition with you, the culture can be dismissive.

What is the most rewarding part about being a woman in a leadership role?

Developing other people. Leadership is lateral. Managers manage work, leaders lead people. When I can lead someone by coaching, mentoring, advocating and watching them succeed—it’s extremely fulfilling.

Why is diversity in business important to you?

True diversity opens the universe to diverse ideas and perspectives. Technology is evolutionary and we can only continue to evolve by inclusion. Leveraging the same ideas and practices is living the definition of insanity.

What advice would you give an aspiring female IT leader?

Never give up! Pivot, pivot, pivot and be evolutionary. Yes, they are judging you but remember how you feel about yourself outweighs anything others think or say about you.
